Bernard Fuemmeler, PhD, MPH
Principal Investigator
Dr. Bernard Fuemmeler is one of the co-Principal Investigators of the VA-FLH registry. A faculty member at VCU, he is currently Professor and Gordon D. Ginder, MD Chair in Cancer Research, Associate Director, Population Science, Massey Cancer Center, and Director of Research in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.

Dr. Jim Burch, MS, PhD

Dr. Jim Burch is one of the co-Principal Investigators of the VA-FLH registry. A faculty member at VCU, he is currently a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.

Chrisa Arcan, PhD, MHS, MBA, RD
Co-Investigator
Dr. Chrisa Arcan is one of the co-Investigators of the VA-FLH registry. A faculty member at VCU, she is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.
Dr. Hua Zhao is one of the co-Investigators of the VA-FLH registry. A faculty member at VCU, he is currently a Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health.

Dr. Trevin Glasgow, PhD
Co-Investigator
Dr. Trevin Glasgow is one of the co-Investigators of the VA-FLH registry and serves as the registry coordinator. He is currently a postdoctoral research fellow in the Department of Family Medicine and Population Health, working with Dr. Fuemmeler.
Dr. Rebecca Kaltman is a breast medical oncologist and the inaugural Executive Director and Endowed Chair of the Saville Cancer Screening and Prevention Center at the Inova Schar Cancer Institute. She obtained her undergraduate honors degree from the University of Michigan followed by her medical degree at MCP-Hahnemann University School of Medicine. She then trained in internal medicine and medical oncology at the University of Pennsylvania and then served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine as a breast oncologist and clinical researcher in the Rena Rowan Breast Center, part of the Abramson Cancer Center of the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Kaltman has focused her career thus far in caring for patients with breast cancer and those with hereditary cancer syndromes. In her new role at Inova, she is expanding the reach of cancer prevention and early detection services for Northern Virginia and beyond.
Firefighter Advisory Board
Steve Weissman retired as a Deputy Fire Chief with the Stafford County Fire and Rescue Department. He is a 46-year veteran of the fire service, starting his career with the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department. Steve is an adjunct instructor for the Virginia Department of Fire Programs as well as a past instructor for the National Fire Academy. He has developed course curriculum in firefighter health and safety, vehicle collision prevention as well as in specialized training for significant injury and line of duty death investigations.
In 2016 Deputy Chief Weissman was diagnosed with occupational cancer. Since then, he joined the efforts of the Firefighter Cancer Support Network in their mission “to help fire and EMS members and their families cope with cancer, and to provide awareness and prevention training”. Steve currently serves as the Virginia State Director for Firefighter Cancer Support Network.
Joe Schumacher is the Chief Operations Officer (CFO) for the Firefighter Cancer Support Network (FCSN) and the Virginia Assistant State Director. Joe started with FCSN in 2013 and is a three-time cancer survivor. In Joe’s role as the CFO of FCSN he is responsible for the day-to-day operations for the national organization. In 2018 Joe retired from the City of Fairfax Fire Department at the rank of Captain after thirty-five years in the fire service. Joe remains an active member of the City of Fairfax. Professional Firefighters Association Local 2702.
Ryan McGill is Master Technician for Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, serves as Director for IAFF local 2068 and Chairman for the Firefighter Cancer Reduction Committee. He is a nationally registered paramedic and is on the Board of Directors for the Virginia Professional Firefighters Charitable Foundation. Recognizing the toxic exposure from oriented strand board (OSB) used in training, Mr. McGill was seminal in leading legislative efforts to prohibit the use of OSBs in Virginia and he played a key role in expanding the presumptive cancer legislation in Virginia to include thyroid cancer in addition to bladder. For this work he was recognized and presented with the 2022 Governor’s Fire Service Award.
Dr. Travis Stokes is a field operational Captain for Richmond Fire and Emergency Services. He started his fire service career 15 years ago in Prince George County. A strong advocate for population health, Dr. Stokes has led multiple health equity events under the Officer of the Governor and Virginia Department of Emergency Management. In addition to this, he specializes in public health and health promotion. He has developed curriculum to support the health of firefighters and improve disparate health outcomes.
Dr. Allen Yee, MD serves as Medical Director for the Chesterfield Fire and EMS Department and is a VCU faculty in Emergency Medicine. Dr. Yee received the 2020 Governor’s EMS award for Excellence in EMS. Dr. Yee is a trained firefighter and active in the department’s tactical EMS program.
